‘CoQ10’ Wins Health and Welfare Minister’s Award in Health Industry Technologies Exhibition Korea Winning a series of science and technology awards including Jang Young-Shil Award demonstrates Daewoong Pharmaceutical possesses the best technology for drug synthesis in Korea. Daewoong ‘CoQ10’… is prepared with high purity and quality technology and also secure manufacturing competitiveness. As ‘Daewoong CoQ10’, developed for the first time in Korea and the second time in the world, wins a series of authoritative science and technology awards, Daewoong Pharmaceutical (president: Yun Jae Seung) is winning recognition for drug synthesis technology. It announced on the 8th of December 2005 that ‘Daewoong CoQ10’ had won the Health and Welfare Minister’s Excellence Award, in the Excellent Technology Competition at the Health Industry Technologies Exposition. Winning this award after the ‘Jang Young-Shil Award’, a science and technology award, as hosted by Korea Industrial Technology Association and awarded by the Minister of Science and Technology demonstrates that Daewoong Pharmaceutical possesses the best drug synthesis technology in Korea for synthesizing raw material for drugs, both nominally and virtually. "The supply of CoQ10, which is gaining attention abroad as a drug and health food, has not been a smooth process and has not benefited many people due to technical difficulties. However, as Daewoong succeeded in synthesizing and developing CoQ10 for the first time in Korea and the second time in the world 30 years after Japanese Nashin succeeded in the development, we will be able to do a great deal for people’s health with finished products developed in series along with exports and commercialization of 40 billion won of raw materials a year,” said Dr. Choi Su Jin (Drug Synthesis Research Team), who played the trigger role in developing CoQ10. “Our research has brought fruitful results over such a short period of time of one and a half years thanks to our research staff who put their combined energy into the research period and the company which didn’t stop encouraging and supporting us so that we could work passionately.” She also added, “Daewoong CoQ10, which was developed using advanced synthesis technology, has a high purity percentage over 99%, is now recording 10% (20 tons out of 220) of the world’s markets for CoQ10 raw material which were once monopolized by Japan.” Daewoong Chemical recorded KRW 10 billion of exports to the US, Europe, and Japan last year, its launching year, and more than KRW 40 billion of exports to 15 countries in the world are expected this year. 'CoQ10', which is a factor found in all blood cells of the human body, functions as a powerful antioxidant removing free radicals, the cause of cancers, adult diseases, and aging and as an energy generator engaging on a basic level in the process of transferring energy of the mitochondrial electron transport system. With these noted functions, it is in high demand for the prevention of lifestyle diseases such as, heart disease, fatigue recovery, decreasing obesity and aiding in male fertility, and skin cosmetics. It has about KRW 4 trillion markets around the world. It is reported that Japan has recently created a KRW 400 billion market in the last couple of years and a US KRW 1 trillion market. As a consequence, Daewoong Pharmaceutical has recently advanced into this product area with ‘Gemron-CoQ10’, a high-potency general nutritional antioxidant product developed with its own technology. ‘Gemron-CoQ10’ contains more nutritive substances than any other general nutritional products in the domestic market; it contains twenty-one kinds of nutrients including eleven kinds of vitamins (vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, D, and E) and nine kinds of minerals (selenium, calcium iron, magnesium, zinc, etc.). Containing six antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, manganese, zinc, and copper) is its advantage. In addition, the stability of the vitamins, which is susceptible to oxidation, has been increased with vitamins and minerals separated into two layers. Also, the small size of the pill lowers the pill burden. Gemron-CoQ10 is classified as an OTC (Over the Counter) drug and a package contains 90 pills.
