Opening of Korea’s First “Non-barrier Playground”
A fantastic playground for both handicapped and non-handicapped children to play in was recently established by Daewoong Pharmaceutical. It was largely financed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s employee fund, matching grants and proceeds from sales.
President Jong-Wook Lee, of Daewoong held the completion ceremony of the “Non-barrier Playground” No.1 at the Ttukseom Seoul Forest on the 20th of December in the presence of Vice Mayor Young-Jin Kwon and the employees of the company. The playgrounds theme is based on the motif, “Imaginary Land of Giants”, has an area of 250pyong (approx. 826m2) and provides a safe haven where handicapped children can experience culture, as well as an opportunity for both handicapped and non-handicapped children to naturally share their time so that it may aid in physical and psychological rehabilitation.
The cost of the construction of the playground came to a total of 1.1 billion won, all of which was paid for by Daewoong Pharmaceutical. The land was provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the design was done by installation artist Ok-Sang Lim. “The social contributions of our company arise from our wish for the mental and physical health of our people.” Daewoong Pharmaceutical said, adding, “By arranging an open space where both handicapped and non-handicapped children can share and to do our best for both to have a healthy body and mind.”
In the mean time, Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s project of building these playgrounds is also taking place at the Congressional Building in Yeouido and at Guri. The constructions are financed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical employee’s monthly contributions, a matching grant by the company, part of the proceeds from the sales at their Beautiful Shop, which Daewoong Pharmaceutical established in 2004, and 1% of profits made from the new analgesic drug, “EZN6”.
