- 80 Foreign students from 17 countries, including China, Russia, Mongolia   – and India were awarded total of KRW 150 million

- 232 students granted scholarships since 2009opportunities for internship and employment for excellent students

- Special performance by singer Woo JeongHoon, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, touched participants

Daewoong Foundation (Chairperson Chang Bong-Ae) held a ceremony to present its 3rd scholarships for foreign students at the auditorium of Daewoong Pharmaceutical. 80 students’ from17 different countries, including China, Vietnam, Paraguay, Guatemala and Russia, were awarded the scholarships. The total amount of funds awarded was KRW 150 million.

232 students have been funded in total since the scholarships were introduced in 2009. The foundation also provides internship opportunities to some foreign students. Some of these outstanding internship students may even gain the opportunity to become full-time employees.

As Daewoong President Jeong Nanyoung said in his congratulatory message, "Daewoong Group has long been interested in developing talented foreign students to achieve our goal of becoming a truly global health care group. We began a scholarship program for foreign students when we learned that there were many foreign students who lacked the ability to pay their living expenses. We will continuously support students who want to work hard. As well, we will provide job opportunities for students with Daewoong Group or an overseas branch after graduation, where they will be on an equal footing with Korean employees.”

Turkish student Tipoon Kartav (28, Dept. of Linguistics, 4th semester in the Master’s degree course at SNU said, "I am extremely happy to get a scholarship, as I was able to earn tuition and expenses by working in Korea, a country with a high standard of living. I really thank Daewoong for their great help, both financially and educationally.

At the awards ceremony, Miss Kim Min Gyeong from China, a 1st round scholarship student, gave her thoughts. She is currently working on the antibiotic frame team in the Marketing section of Daewoong Pharmaceutical. She said, "I received a scholarship in 2009, had internship training in 2010, and became a full-time employee this year. I really thank Daewoong Pharmaceutical for helping me get closer to my dream of becoming a global marketer. I hope you can also have the great opportunity of working here."

At the end of the ceremony, there was a special performance by crossover star Woo JeongHoon, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, that was enjoyed by the students in attendance. A promising young musician, Woo JeongHoon played a prince in the musical "Empress Myeongseong," which toured to New York and LA in 1997 when he was an elementary school student. He moved people with his performance of the pop songs "What a wonderful world" and "Friends in Harmony, "which is to be released on his new album, which he sang in his strong and characteristic sweet and low-pitched voice.

Daewoong Foundation selected the 3rd round of scholarship recipients through an interview after receiving recommendations from embassies and universities. A spokesperson for the foundation said that "the competition rate was one out of eight. This year, we had applications from students from 17 countries, compared to 9 last year."

This was the second time this award was offered. The award was initially established to support students in need from Asian countries, in accordance with the Daewoong Group’s commitment to becoming a global health care group.

Since its foundation in 1984, Daewoong Foundation has provided scholarships to domestic and international students, and plans to continuously expand the size of scholarship.
